This MTB course focusses on generic bike handling and core cycling techniques that are all relevant to mountain biking and introduces the beginner biker to riding off-road on forest roads and trails. The emphasis is on developing good balance on the bike and safe braking to develop confidence and to ensure the fundamentals of MTB are in place
- The ready position (AKA “the attack position”)
- Balance
- Pedalling
- Gear selection
- Braking
- Cornering
In addition, we will learn:
- how to carry out a safe cycle check, also known as the M-check
- how to correctly fit your helmet
- how to set up your bike to ride – brake position & saddle height
Is this course for me? You have limited or no experience riding bikes on off-road terrain and have not done much cycling on the road either. But worry not! This is a great place to start – get the fundamentals in place before the bad habits start to form!
Every time you book a course or activity with Swift Trails we will donate £1 to the Tweed Valley Trail Association
We enjoy and benefit from a wonderful community of bikers here in the Tweed Valley who volunteer their free time to make sure the trails are maintained and safe to ride. They depend on voluntary contributions to continue their valuable work.

Great day out! Learned a lot. Covered all the basics, everything that was missing. I now have a much better understanding of what should I do and why. Lots of exercises to practice. Recommended to everyone who wants practice without pressure.

The course really gave a great insight into the technique and theory of MTB, on the level I could actually understand and apply. It was a real confidence booster too. Thank you Lucy!
