A double loop around Portmore Estate and the Black Barony (Eddleston)
Last year we discovered two fabulous routes north of Eddleston perfect for the novice rider and explorer. What’s more, neither involved a huge amount of climbing so we have combined the two, in a slightly shortened version, but have retained all the top-tastic features of the ride. The first loop takes us into the Portmore Estate and round the stunning Portmore Loch, described as a “little gem” of a route by a previous rider. Then we cross over the valley, follow the road to Shiplaw before heading south along the Old Post Road track to Black Barony and then dropping back down to Eddleston through ancient woodland.
There’s a short gentle climb on both loops but generally easy pedalling with some flowy descents. Given the time of year it may be quite muddy in a few areas. Apart from a short section on tarmac most of this route is off-road.
